94: Clubhouse for Podcasters

What’s This Episode About?

I’m officially back from hiatus and we’re kicking things off with Clubhouse!

If you’ve spent any time in any entrepreneurial or podcasting communities in the past month, I’m just going to assume you’ve heard or seen the word “Clubhouse” 18,001 times already.

(Just in case you haven’t, it’s an audio-only app that lets people host chats or discussions about pretty much anything and it’s taken off like crazy.)

In this quick episode, I share why you might have to wait to join the Clubhouse craze, whether I think it’s a beneficial new tool podcasters should be utilizing or just another shiny object to distract us, and an amazing free resource to help you get your bearings on the app and make the most out of it.

Welcome to podcasting for coaches. I'm Britany Felix and I'm a podcast launch consultant who specializes in helping coaches and consultants utilize the power of podcasting as a way to build brand awareness and generate new leads for their business. I realize not every new coach or consultant can afford to hire someone to help launch their show. So I created this podcast as a way to guide you through the process of launching and utilizing your very own podcast to help you grow your business and reach a new audience of adoring followers and potential clients. If you're ready to get your voice and podcast out into the world, head over to podcasting for coaches.com to learn more. Welcome back to the podcast. I am finally back after a multi month hiatus. This is episode number 94. And we're going to talk about clubhouse today. This is going to be a pretty quick episode, hopefully, because I don't really do anything on clubhouse. And I don't know much about it, but I have some resources for you. And I have some ideas of how you can utilize it based on what I've seen in the podcasting industry so far, and my understanding of the platform. Now I had originally intended to actually come back from my break last week. But after the shit show, aka a domestic terrorist attack on the Capitol Building, I decided it might be best to hold off for one more week, which actually ended up working out perfectly. Because one of my clients actually released an episode this week, all about clubhouse, it's actually called How to get started on clubhouse for entrepreneurs. So it is a perfect companion to this episode. So if you're wondering how you can get started on clubhouse, and basically the logistics of it like actually how to get on the app, and how to utilize it set up your profile, the different things that you can do with it, how you can join different chats and different club houses or clubs, I'm not really sure she breaks it all down. I've already forgotten half the stuff that I learned in the episode when I edited it for her, because I did that last week. But it's going to be a fantastic episode for you to really kind of get to the nitty gritty of the app itself and figure out how to get in there and start utilizing it. She Of course comes at it from our perspective of being an entrepreneur and utilizing it for your business. But the fantastic thing is the same principles can mostly apply to your podcast as well, since it is a part of your business. So I will have a link in the show notes for this episode to that episode of her podcast, which is the sweet life entrepreneur podcast. To find the show just go to podcasting for coaches. com, click on the podcast have in the main menu and go to episode number 94. So really quickly, just to get this right out of the way, as of the time of recording this episode, which is two days before it goes live. Because I am a habitual procrastinator when it comes to my own work. clubhouse is only available for iOS devices. So if you are an Android user like I am, you're screwed, at least for the time being while it's in beta, they do say that they're going to open it up to Android users at some undetermined point in the future. Now I will start off by saying that I'm a little apprehensive about clubhouse as a user of it in terms of just like a consumer. So the idea behind it is that you can go in and you can participate in all of these chat rooms or at least listen in as other people are speaking and presenting and having these conversations. The only thing that annoys me about this though, is nothing is recorded, at least not right now. Not sure if I have plans for that in the future. But you have to be there live for everything. So the FOMO is real. And I am not a fan of the FOMO tactic at all. We all have shit going on. We've got stuff to do. We are busy, busy people. And I'm not going to rearrange my whole day just to make sure like I'm available when somebody decides they want to go live and have a conversation. If you're the type of person who really needs these like active engaged one on one like conversations or you're speaking with people real time, by all means like go for it if you like that type of interaction. I don't necessarily need that. I am an introvert by nature which is shocking because I didn't really ever used to be and it may not come across that way on the show. But I've made no secret of in the past. Like I am an introvert I love doing these solo episodes. I love talking to you. In these episodes. having conversations with other people though, is a little bit difficult for me because one, I like to be doing a million things at once. So staying focused and engaged on one person having one conversation is a little bit difficult and also I am Truly incapable of faking small talk and sincerity. I'm kind of like Stevie from shits Creek in that way, if you watch that show, I just cannot do it. Like when people send me these random DMS on Instagram, and they're like, Hi, it's so great to connect, I want to have a real conversation, how's the year going for you? I literally just don't respond. I can't do it cannot do it. So if you ever DM me on Instagram or something like that, and I don't respond, please don't take it personally. I just have no idea what to say to that. And I don't want to have fake conversations, so I just don't. Anyways, back to clubhouse. I don't like having to feel like I'm on standby just like waiting around for this content. I want to be able to consume it when it's a good time for me to consume it. Hence my love for podcasts. Now, if that does not bother you, clubhouse could be fantastic for you. I know so many people who are saying that this is the connection they've been missing during this pandemic. And I think that is wonderful. I also know a lot of people who are saying that this has done amazing things for their business and their podcast. I have seen people who and even April in the episode that I mentioned just a little bit ago, shares that when they started on clubhouse and like started having conversations on there. They saw their podcast downloads increase. They saw their Instagram followers increased. They saw their newsletter members increase website traffic, all of those things. And they can attribute it back to a certain presentation or something they did on clubhouse. So I do think there is power in it, even though I'm a little frustrated by the FOMO tactics. And I am extremely frustrated by the fact that it's not available to Android users, which are 60 to 70% of the world's smartphone users. I do still see the potential in this for coaches and consultants and podcasters. So if you're wanting to use clubhouse for your podcast, I can see this working out very, very well, to have some one on one conversations with your listeners. So this could look like releasing an episode on Monday and then doing a podcast talk or chat, whatever it is every Thursday about the episode that week. So the listeners take a listen to the episode on Monday. And then they come and have this chat with you on Thursday and clubhouse and can ask you any follow up questions. Or it could look like seriously just hopping on sporadically. Whenever you have some time to do like an AMA with your audience. You blast it out on social media, they're there, you promote your podcast and you can grow your audience that way. This can also look like sourcing content for your podcast, from your listeners via a conversation in clubhouse. So you could literally be having a conversation or a topic with them. And ask them for ideas like what content are you missing? What do you need more information on? What can I give you in the podcast? That will be beneficial for you? Because if they have questions, the rest of your audience is going to have those same questions. So I mean, there's nothing like groundbreaking in this episode clubhouse doesn't necessarily operate any differently than like a Facebook group where you have these interactions with people. It's just that it's kind of a hot thing right now. And if you're wondering if it's worth your time to get involved with it, if you are an iOS user, yeah, it kind of seems like it is based on what I'm seeing in the podcasting industry. People are saying it has been tremendous to the growth of their show and their business. They're saying that it is allowing them to connect with their audience on a much deeper level, because they're able to get that engagement back and have a two way conversation rather than a one way conversation that they do on the podcast. And other audience members are loving being able to do that feedback, because a lot of people are avoiding Facebook these days. And with Instagram, it's hard to have a collective conversation amongst multiple people. So clubhouse is kind of a good community setting if you want to stay off of Facebook. But again, please bear in mind that as you're sharing this information with your audience, as you're telling them to connect with you on clubhouse, and come join this chat every week after the podcast episode drops, that is only available to iOS users right now. And you don't want to make the rest of your audience feel alienated. So explain that to them. That it's only available for iOS, it's opening up to Android and here's how they can connect with you. In the meantime, if they can't get on clubhouse, so don't completely cut off the form of contact for everyone else just because you've decided that you want to be on clubhouse. But that's pretty much it for this episode. I do think clubhouse is worth it if you can get on there. But don't alienate your audience that can't and then definitely, definitely, definitely go check out Episode 209 of The Suite Life entrepreneur for the actual like basics of getting started on clubhouse and how to get everything set up and how to use the app. And again, the link for that will be in the show notes for this episode at podcasting for coaches.com. Thank you so much for being patient with me during my hiatus while we renovated and sold one house and built and moved Then do another and then have the holidays and just kind of dealt with the end of 2020. I appreciate you sticking around and still being here. And I will see you back here next week or I'm going to talk about the 2021 state of podcasting, which means I'm going to give you some industry updates. Now, I do want to remind you that I do also have the podcasting insider's club newsletter. It is a once a month email blast that goes out on the last day of the month. It does only cost five bucks a month to be on this newsletter. But it is a curated list of all of the most recent industry updates and cool new tools and resources that I have dug through so many like blogs and articles and websites and Facebook posts and Instagram posts to really find the most relevant things for you as a coach or consultant who's podcasting as part of a business so that you can stay up to date with trends and new tools and policy changes for a lot of these platforms as well. So if you want to make sure that you constantly stay up to date with everything happening in the industry that can really help you with your show, head over to podcasting for coaches comm and click on the tab in the main menu that says podcasting insider's club to get signed up so that you can get the update that will go out later this month. Thank you so much again and I will see you back here next week. And that wraps up another episode of podcasting for coaches.
